Van Wert County YWCA History

Established in 1916 the YWCA of Van Wert County, Ohio was built by local philanthropist, Mr. George Marsh. Mr. Marsh also founded the Marsh Foundation, Hotel Marsh and the Van Wert County Hospital. “The House that George Built” was designed as a residency for young women leaving the farm to attend school or seek employment in the town. At the time, the primary mission was to provide housing and social experiences for women. The recreation facilities were small but adequate. Today the housing program is still considered a primary YWCA service program. The new YWCA Housing Program, which includes emergency shelter and transitional housing for homeless women and children developed in 1998 is a modern extension of the original intent of the founder. Current housing clients are in need of special assistance. Largely unemployed, physically or mentally challenged, our clients need assistance in attaining the skills necessary in coping with daily challenges and making the transition to affordable community housing.

The YWCA is known as a leader in the community for its social service programs. The YWCA Summer Food Program is one of the leading food programs in the state of Ohio. In 2009, the YWCA served 11, 956 meals to needy children and provided free recreation for 10 weeks during the summer in Van Wert County. The program serves as an example of the ongoing efforts by the YWCA in adjusting its service strategy in meeting the needs of an ever-changing population.

The YWCA still offers those programs that have become recognized as community service staples.
The YWCA is recognized for the following events now staples to the Van Wert community.
