History

Established in 1916 the YWCA of Van Wert County, Ohio was built by local philanthropist, Mr. George Marsh. Mr. Marsh also founded the Marsh Foundation, Hotel Marsh and the Van Wert County Hospital. “The House that George Built” was designed as a residency for young women leaving the farm to attend school or seek employment in the town. At the time, the primary mission was to provide housing and social experiences for women. The recreation facilities were small but adequate. Today the housing program is still considered a primary YWCA service program.
